Working with dirtmaps

    What is a dirt map? Well a dirt map is a black and white image in which the black areas (typically) represent dirt.

    If you are lucky enough to be working on a film scanned on professional film scanning equipment like a Scanity or a Director machine, then your image files may contain a dirt map in the alpha channel, created by an infrared camera able to photograph the dirt and damage on top of the film.

    However, even if your scan doesn't have one, you can create a reasonable dirtmap yourself:
